What Is Perl?

Perl is a group of two high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming languages. However, from 2000 to 2019, the term "PerL" referred to Perl 6, which had undergone a redesign and was renamed officially to Raku in October of that year.

In 1987, Larry Wall created Perl as a general-purpose Unix scripting language for automating report processing. It has undergone numerous revisions and updates since then. Raku, originally a rewrite of Perl 5, became its own language after a while. Each language's development team continues to work on it independently, and they freely share ideas.

They provide text processing facilities without the arbitrary data-length limits of many contemporary Unix command-line tools, including C, shell script, AWK, and sed. Due to its superior regular expression and string parsing capabilities, Perl 5 became very popular as a CGI scripting language in the late 1990s. System administration, network programming, finance, bioinformatics, and other fields rely on Perl 5, in addition to CGI. Because of its versatility and power, it's been dubbed "the Swiss Army chainsaw of scripting languages" despite its ugly appearance.

When it was first introduced in 1998, it was dubbed the "duct tape that holds the Internet together," a reference to its widespread use as a glue language and public perception of its ugliness. Perl is a powerful scripting language that allows for concise and efficient source code.

When Larry Wall was a programmer at Unisys in 1987, he began working on Perl, and on February 1, 1988, he sent out Perl 1.0 to the comp.sources.unix newsgroup. Over the following years, the vocabulary of the language grew at a rapid pace.

The regular expression engine in Perl 2 (released in 1988) was significantly improved over Perl 1. Binary data streams were first supported in Perl 3 (released in 1989).

On March 22nd, 2000, Perl 5.6 was made public.

On July 18, 2002, Perl 5.8 was first released, and it has received updates on a nearly annual basis since then. A new version of Perl was released on the 20th anniversary of Perl 1.0, on December 18th, 2007. The Perl 5.12.0 version was released on April 12th, 2010. JSON support was included in Perl 5.14, which was released on May 14th. Perl 5.16 was released on May 20th, 2012 for everyone to use.

The latest Perl version, 5.18, was released on May 18th of this year. dtrace hooks, lexical subs, CORE:: subs, a security hash overhaul, and support for Unicode 6.2 are among the notable new features.

Perl 5.20 was released on May 27th, 2014. Perl 7 will replace Perl 5 and will be released in June of 2020.

Advantages of Perl Language for Developers

Perl has various benefits for developers; a few of the most important benefits of using Perl are given below.

  • As an open-source language, Perl is available for free and there are numerous resources available to help you learn the language.
  • Because of Perl's portability, you can use it on any platform. This means that no matter what operating system or hardware you have, you're good to go as long as Python has been installed.
  • Versatility in this context refers to the ability to perform multiple tasks with a single programme as opposed to utilising separate programmes for each one. With less time spent managing multiple applications, your work will be more efficient.
  • Perl has cross-platform support, so it can be used no matter where you are.
  • Books and online tutorials are just a couple of the resources available to help you learn the language. This is fantastic because it's critical that everyone has free access to a programme like this one!
  • Because you don't need an external compiler to run the code on your computer, even someone with only rudimentary programming skills can do it.
  • Perl can be used in a variety of contexts, including text processing, web programming, system administration, and application development.
  • System administration can be done with Perl, which is advantageous because it ensures that your computer is always up to date with the latest security patches.
  • There are a variety of modules available to help Perl programmers create cool things like CGI scripts, interactive websites, and even graphical user interfaces.

There are several other advantages to learn Perl and adopt it for your next website or app development project.
