The Venice Tide Barrier Project was launched in 2003 after 40 years of debate on how to preserve Venice from floods and avoid it from sinking further. This remarkable technical marvel, which comprises of 78 rotating gates, is intended to prevent seawater from entering the Venetian Lagoon during high tides and storms. The gates are massive metal boxes filled with water that sit at the bottom of the sea, each measuring 6,500 square feet. Water is drained from the gates using compressed air when a tide of more than 3 12 feet is expected. The gates will rise to the surface of the water, barring the sea from entering the lagoon and thereby stopping the passage of the tide.

 

The Bailong Elevator (Zhangjiajie, China)
